Research:

Semiconductor lasers: optical feedback, nonlinear dynamics, optical chaos, optical rogue waves, photonic neurons, speckle.

 

Complex systems and data analysis: networks, ordinal analysis, climate data analysis, image analysis, extreme events, outlier detection, critical transitions, tipping points, early warning indicators.

 

Nonlinear dynamics: excitability, neuronal dynamics, synchronization, stochastic processes.

Teaching: I teach in the School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering of Terrassa (ESEIAAT), in the School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME) and in the Barcelona Master in Photonics. I also regularly impart lectures in PhD schools. The slides in English are available here.

Editorial activity: I am Section Editor of Chaos, Solitons & Fractals (Elsevier) and Topical Editor of Optics Letters (Optica).

 

Biography: I received the bachelor and master degrees in physics from Universidad de la República, Uruguay, where I was Assistant and Associate Professor (1989-2004). I received the PhD degree in physics from Bryn Mawr College (USA) in 1999. I was a postdoctoral researcher at University of Nice, at Bangor University and at Universitat de les Illes Balears (2000-2002). I joined Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in 2004 as a Ramon and Cajal researcher, became Associate Professor in 2009 and Professor (Catedratica) in 2018. You can find here my CV.

 

Awards: I received three ICREA ACADEMIA awards (you can find my ICREA profile here). I am fellow of the OPTICA society (formerly OSA, you can find my fellow profile here).
